Factor That Influence Students To Be Involved In LGBT Activities At Public Higher Education Institutions In Klang Valley

Abstract
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) are group of individuals who exhibit behaviour which oppose societal norms as well as Islamic religious practices. However, this LGBT group seems to be increasingly active and the rate of involvement is alarming. This is more worrying as students who study in Public Higher Education Institutions are also involved in LGBT activities. With this in mind, the current study aims to explore the factors that influence students to be involved in LGBT activities. The present study employs a qualitative research design using a phenomenological approach. Five (5) informants from Public Higher Education Institutions who self-claimed as LGBT individuals were recruited in this study using a snow ball sampling technique for in-depth interview sessions using open-ended questions. Later, the qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that there are nine (9) factors underlie the involvement of students in LGBT such as natural personality, the role of sexual orientation during childhood, material support, addiction caused by experiencing sexual harassment, peer influence, lack of attention and control by the parents, lack of religious education and Islamic teaching, loneliness and also to fulfill high sexual desire. The findings from this study are expected to assist the relevant professional individuals such as social workers, counselors, psychologists as well as other helping professions to understand the factors that influence students to be involved in LGBT activities. Hence, it helps to formulate appropriate interventions to curb the involvement in LGBT activities as an effort to ensure the well-being of individuals, families, communities and country. Abstrak Lesbian, Gay, Biseksual dan Transgender (LGBT) merupakan golongan yang berperilaku songsang dan salah dari segi norma masyarakat mahupun dari sudut agama Islam. Namun begitu, golongan LGBT ini semakin giat dan aktif berkembang dalam masyarakat kita hari ini. Perkara yang lebih membimbangkan adalah apabila golongan ini terdiri daripada mereka yang sedang menuntut di Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA). Oleh itu, objektif kajian ini dijalankan adalah untuk meneroka faktor mahasiswa Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA) terlibat dalam LGBT. Kajian yang dijalankan adalah berbentuk kajian kualitatif dengan menggunakan fenomenologi sebagai reka bentuk kajian. Lima (5) orang informan yang terdiri daripada mahasiswa IPTA yang terlibat dalam LGBT dipilih menggunakan teknik persampelan bola salji (snow ball sampling) telah ditemu bual secara mendalam menggunakan panduan soalan separa struktur. Data yang diperoleh kemudiannya dianalisis menggunakan teknik analisis tematik. Hasil kajian mendapati terdapat sembilan (9) faktor yang mempengaruhi penglibatan mahasiswa IPTA dalam LGBT iaitu personaliti semulajadi, orientasi peranan seksualiti semasa kecil, sokongan material, ketagihan kesan pengalaman mengalami gangguan seksual, pengaruh rakan sejenis, kurang perhatian dan kawalan ibu bapa, kurang kefahaman ilmu agama dan akhlak Islamiah, faktor kesunyian dan bagi memenuhi keinginan seksual yang tinggi. Dapatan yang diperoleh dari kajian ini diharap akan dapat membantu profesion menolong yang berkaitan seperti pekerja sosial, kanselor dan psikologis untuk memahami punca dan faktor mereka terlibat dalam LGBT dan seterusnya merangka intervensi yang bersesuaian untuk mencegah gejala LGBT ini bagi menjamin kesejahteraan individu, keluarga, masyarakat dan negara.References
